The white blood cells get activated when they come in contact with bacteria or an indication then they produce antibodies to destroy infection during that process they remember the particular type of bacteria which is known as immune system. As they remember the bacteria so, whenever the same bacteria enters the body again the white blood cells reminds them and destroy them in this way they differentiate between the two.
