How do you support that the element Mg belongs to 3rd period and 2nd group?

The electronic configuration of Mg is (2,8,2).
We know that, the no. of shells indicates the period number and the number of valence electrons indicates the group number.
Hence, Mg belongs to the 3rd period and group 2.
