The past of the British Raj refers to the period of British rule on the Indian subcontinent between 1858 and 1947. The system of governance was instituted in 1858 when the rule of the East India Company was transferred to the Crown in the person of Queen Victoria (who in 1876 was proclaimed Empress of India).

Benefits :

Hunter opined that the modernization of India, growth of nationalism, efficient administration, modern education, Law and order was the Legacy of the English to the Indians. They even showered lavish praise on the British for converting India into a civilized nation.

Why did they came:

British came to India in 1608 for trade. In 1498, Vasco da Gama first came to India in search of trade prospects. He was a Portuguese. ... Later, they built an empire in India (for even more trade & tax, which they sent to England making it the most powerful kingdom) and ruled us from 1757 till 1947 - for 190 years.

Disadvantages of British Rule :

1. Incomes declined by 50%
2. Enforced India manufacturing out of business.
3. Industries disappeared.
4. Farmers and villages became poor and starved due to cash crops.
5. British racism hurt Indians.
