Desire and want are two different entities. The former can be compared to and a luxury whereas the latter can be compared to a need. Desire is ‘a strong desire or wish for something’; but want is ‘a need’. For example, someone may have the desire to buy a better house in a posh area or a better car with new features. However, want is something like a necessity. For example, food, water, air, shelter, etc. without which it is impossible to live.

A desire may become a want when one has all his basics wants fulfilled; one may desire something so intensely that one feels incomplete without the fulfillment of the desire. For example, one desires so intensely to have a new bike that day and night he dreams about it and makes efforts to fulfill his desire. The truth is such desires not only become wants but tend to be fulfilled also.
