Required solution :-

An algal bloom is a rapid increase in the population of algae in an aquatic ecosystem.

The phenomenon can be recognized by the discoloration on the surface of the water. It usually occurs due to the introduction of a nutrient into an aquatic ecosystem.

Now let's see how these algal booms affect the aquatic species!

The harmful algal blooms affects sea birds, sea turtles, marine mammals and many species of finfishes.

→ They produce toxin-producing species which are termed as harmful algal booms (HABs) which cause damage by producing biological toxins or interfere with mechanical functions or organisms.

→ These harmful algal booms (HABs) are responsible for the mass die off fish and other aquatic animals after consumption of the toxic algae.

→ Though marine life is affected the most, the toxins can travel through the food chain and can impact larger animals like sea lions, turtles, dolphins, birds and manatees.

More information :-

What are the causes of algal bloom?

• Excess of Nutrients.

Algal blooms Causing death of Aquatic species. Out of various types of water pollution, one of them is algal blooms. The ones most affected with it are the aquatic organisms. Imagine a thick layer of a green algal bloom on the surface of the water, blocking all light coming inside. An algal bloom is the aggrevated increase in the growth of algae population in aquatic ecosystems, both in fresh and in marine waters. It is also known as either water bloom or marine bloom. Algal blooms, which comprising of bio-toxins, it causes extreme discoloration their specialized pigmented algae cells.

There are four basic type of colours

  • Green
  • Red
  • Brown and Yellow

Water bodies affected by the algal blooms are mainly targeted by cyanobacteria and red tides. These nutrients come from lands and farms that are heavily loaded with nitrogenous and phosphatic fertilizers. Rain is the primary that wash away all the nitrogen and phosphorus from soil all way to water bodies. Poor sewage treatment and raw untreated sewage also act as a primary source to causes of algal bloom. Due to the depletion of the ozone layer, it results in global warming, which in turn causes rapid growth of algal blooms.
