It inhibits renin secretion, thereby inhibiting the production of angiotensin and aldosterone. It inhibits the renal sympathetic nervous system. ANP has the opposite effect of aldosterone on the kidney: aldosterone increases renal sodium retention and ANP increases renal sodium loss.
