In animals, cells replicate through mitosis in which there are different phases like prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase and then cytokinesis. The cell undergoes whole cell cycle whose last phase is mitosis phase where a mother cell divides into two daughter cells.

By the process of meiosis . In meiosis, the chromosome or chromosomes duplicate (during interphase) and homologous chromosomes exchange genetic information (chromosomal crossover) during the first division, called meiosis I. Then, the gametes are formed , each gametes(male and female) containing half the no. of chromosomes . Then these gametes dude during fertilization and the original chromosome no. Is restored and a new single celled zygote is formed.
