Because rays of sun do not fall on earth equally.
On equator, rays of sun fall vertically so temperature in middle zone of earth remains high but when we move from equator to poles, where rays of sun do not falls equally, temperature in theese zones remain low...

The earth has been divided into temperature zone on the basis of intensity of heat received from the sun by a particular place.
