The need for resources. The British, the leading nation, needed fundamental raw resources, such as food, rubber, oils, grains, tea, iron, gold, silver, copper, timber, diamonds, gems, silks, wool, cotton, furs, fish and more.

These materials are not indigenous to the UK. Those that are, are limited in quantity.

To procure such resources and to protect those sources colonies were created to house, feed, administrate, and warehouse those materials and the plantations, lumber facilities, mines and transport. Those colonies had to be militarily defended. Sometimes the local government resisted which had to be suppressed so the trading company can take resources for the trading company must make profits and contribute to the English treasury.

Industrialization led to imperialism for several reasons. ... Industrialized countries found they were able to obtain cheaper resources from their colonies than from other countries. Thus, countries wanted to gain colonies so they could obtain the resources needed in their industries.
