The IUCN maintains a Red Data Book which contains a record of animals which are known to be in danger. It includes endangered, vulnerable, rare, extinct etc. species of plants and animals. It helps to create awareness about the various species. Also, the information about status of the species in danger helps in increasing concern and implementing ways to protect and preserve them.
