Answer:

Robert Gabriel Mugabe, a politician and revolutionary from Zimbabwe, presided as president of that country from 1987 to 2017 after serving as prime minister from 1980 to 1987.

Explanation:

When Robert Mugabe initially took office in Zimbabwe, a country that had been divided by nearly a century of white colonial rule, he was heralded as a hero of African freedom and a proponent of racial harmony. Nearly four decades later, he was widely criticised as a power-crazed despot who was willing to use death squads, manipulate elections, and wreck the economy in his persistent quest for dominance by people both domestically and abroad. In the end, Mugabe was overthrown by his own armed forces in November 2017. He passed away in Singapore at age 95.

He displayed his tenacity—some may even say stubbornness—until the very end by refusing to accept his expulsion from his own ZANU-PF party and hanging on for a week until the de facto coup, when parliament began to consider impeaching him. Wild celebrations followed his resignation.
