how does sound travel through solids liquids and gases

In any medium sound travels particle by particle.
Particles in solids being packed tightly provides more speed for sound to travel as compared to liquids or gases.

Speed of propogation :

solids>liquids> gases

which means sound travels fastest in solids on slowest in gases.
