how does surface roughness affect friction

Friction is caused by the irregularities (roughness) on the two surfaces which are in contact.Irregularities on the two surfaces lock into one another, when attempt to move on any surface. On the rough surface there exist a large number of irregularities. So the frictional force will be greater in the rough surface.sooo in this way surface roughness affect friction.
