Some say brain doesn't generate consciousness, but rather that consciousness is a fundamental part of universe like space and time (or even more fundamental than those), and that the brain is a mechanism to tap into and locally mold that consciousness according to that individual brain's structure.

Abstract

The concept of ‘conspicuous consumption’ is the idea that consumers make explicit comparisons to others when consuming in an effort to portray actual and aspirational statuses. The concept of ‘distinction’ reduces the emphasis on explicit comparisons; consumer choices are seen as predicated on taken-for-granted, internalized norms of appropriate taste. These taken-for-granted ways of perceiving the world and consuming are means of marking the social boundaries of class. While status models of consumption were once dominant in the social sciences, these concepts have undergone considerable critique, particularly when applied outside the contexts in which they were initially developed.
