The Helen, the ghost undermines the narrator's faith in his ability to write ghost stories by revealing to him that it was she who had given him ideas about the ghost stories on a number of occasions in the past. She told him how on many occasions she leaned over his shoulder and transferred or put ideas and plots whenever he had felt stuck up.

The narrator , John Hallock , was quite confident about his ability to write a ghost story it is because he has written some very good stories and has always been able to write one whenever Jenkins has assigned him to do so. but, the ghost of Helen undermines all his ability saying that it was she who had been inspiring in him the thoughts and ideas to write such a story. without her help,he would not have been able to write anything like that.
