As air is inhaled, the mucous membranes of the nose and mouth warm and humidify the air. ... The lungs and respiratory system allow oxygen in the air to be taken into thebody, while also enabling the body to get rid of carbon dioxide in the airbreathed out.

Air is taken in through the nose and the mouth. The mucous membrane lining the nasal cavity (the inside of one’s nose) is moist and therefore most of the dust and other particles stick on to this mucous membrane, without going inside.

There are tiny hairs inside the nasal cavity which further filters the air that is breathed in, before it goes to the lungs.
