x+y=12
(x+y)²=12² ( squaring both side )
x²+y²+2xy=144
x²+y²+2(14)=144 (xy=14)
x²+y²=144-28
x²+y²=116

Hey there!!
we have ,

xy = 14

x +y = 12
 {(x + y)}^{2}  =  {12}^{2} (squaring \: both \: the \: side) \\  \\  =  >  {x }^{2}  +  {y}^{2}  + 2xy = 144 \\  \\  =  >  ({x}^{2}  +  {y}^{2} )  = 144 - 2 \times 14 \\ \\  =  >  {x}^{2}  +  {y}^{2}  = 116
Hope this helps u !!
