How does the tendency of the elements to lose electrons change in the modern periodic table in (a) a group, (b) a period and why?
Answers
A) As we move down the group, the tendency to lose electrons i.e metallic characteristics increases in the left side of the periodic table and decreases in the right side of the table where non metals are found.
B) Along the period the tendency to lose electrons i.e metallic characteristics decreases as the elements are segregated from metals to non metals and metals at the right side. Hence metallic characteristics decreases
Hope it helps

) On moving down a group, the number of shells increases at each succeeding element. As a result, the valence electrons lies farther away from the nucleus. ... As a result, effective nuclear charge increases and the tendency to lose electrons decreases.
