how ethanoic acid got its name as acetic acid

Let me help you with this query.
On cooling, pure ethanoic acid freezes to form flakes like ice. Since, it forms ice like crystals, that's why it is called glacial acetic acid.
It's called glacial because it solidifies into acetic acid crystals at a temperature of 16.7° C. 
Although acetic acid is considered a weak acid, safe enough to drink in the from of vinegar, but glacial acetic acid is corrosive and can cause injury.
