Naladiyar was written by Samana munivargal or Jain monks.

Naladiyar belongs to a series of books called as Pathinen Keelkanaku Nool (Eighteen Lesser Texts)

Naladiyar origin and composition:

  • Samanam or Jainism is one of the many religions which had spreaded across Tamil Nadu. The "Samana Thirthankaras" or the saints of Jainism. It is believed, of the 24 saints only 2 were alive and they were treated equal to God.
  • The Naladiyar poem is composed of 4 lined poems and hence the name. The term Naladiyar can be split into 'naalu' which means 4 and 'adi' which means feet or poem metric in tamil.
  • It is a combination of philosophical poems having three categories. The first category describes leading a virtuous life. The second describes wealth. The third on pleasures.
