Under the Ryotwari system, large or big landowner we're given charge of a particular land area from where they we're supposed to collect revenue and pay the britishers. A defined amount of tax was decided and had to be collected by all means necessary. thus, these big landowners came under pressure from the britishers and had to exploit the small land owners for land revenue collection or else their 'Zamindari' rights were to be taken away. thus Ryotwari settlement gave rise to Landlordism

  1. In the ryotwari areas the land revenue was fixed at very high rate for 20 to 30 years.
  2. So as the price rose the landlords employed more tenants and received the rents from them.
  3. Soon the ryotwari areas turned into landlords.
  4. The tenants paid the rent that was 3 to 7times more than land revenue.
  5. As a result the practices of exploiting the poor peasants rose and the landlords also lost the interest of investing in lands to improve agriculture.
  6. In this way the ryotwari system gave rise to landlordism.
