Sometimes gases are collected over water. The gas produced in a reaction is bubbled through a trough of water and into an upturned gas jar filled with water. This works well for insolublegases such as hydrogen, or gases that do not dissolve easily in water, such as oxygen and carbon dioxide

hope it helped

collect the gas in a submerged test tube as metal with acid hydrogen gas is produced This hydrogen travels to the top of the flask by the tubing and into the test tube submerged in water and from there you can collect as much hydrogen as much produced in the reaction
