The Stage model of memory classifies memory into three systems: sensory, short-term memory and long-term memory.

Explanation:

Sensory memory: The information first enters the sensory memory which stores memory related to sight, hearing and other senses and has a large storage capacity but lasts only for less than a second. This is controlled by the subconsciously and once the sensory stimulus stops, the information is not processed and is forgotten. If attention is paid to the information, it enters the short-term memory. Iconic and echoic memories are different types of sensory memory.

Short-term memory: Memory then enters the short-term memory which is with less capacity. This is the working or the active memory where information is stored temporarily for a brief amount of time, just for a few seconds. Paying attention to the information stored helps to retain and pass it to long-term memory; otherwise, the memory may be forgotten

Long-term memory: Memories which extend short term memory will reach long term memory and can be retrieved with elaboration rehearsals. LTM lasts for a longer period of time lasting days, months or years. Information is layered and constructed and can be retrieved. LTM can be explicit or implicit types.
