Sodium Chloride is an ionic compound formed by the reaction of Sodium and Chlorine.
Sodium reacts by loss of an electron whereas Chlorine reacts by gaining an electron.
The electron configuration of the two elements are as follows:
Sodium :
2:8:1
Sodium ion :
2:8
Chlorine :
2:8:7
Chloride ion :
2:8:8
We see that in the Sodium ion an electron is lost whereas in Chloride ion an electron is gained.
The electron lost by Sodium is gained by the Chlorine and hence an ionic substance is formed.
The ionic substance is Sodium Chloride.
