u can differenciate between them by dissolve them in water to form acidic (by non metals) and basic solution(by metals)

metal oxide:-

*they are basic in nature[Ph level 8-14]

*metal oxides are heterogeneous catalysts and are applied in redox reaction

*They also react with water to form metal hydroxides which are alkaline in nature because these metal hydroxides release OH- ions in solution.

*metal oxide+acid -------) salt+water

example: Cuo+2HCL----)CuCl2+H2O

non metal oxides:-

*they are acidic in nature[Ph level 1-6]

*All nonmetals form covalent oxides with oxygen, which react with water to form acids or with bases to form salts. Most nonmetal oxides are acidic and form oxyacids, which in turn yield hydronium ions (H3O+) in aqueous solution.

*non-metals oxides are homogeneous catalysts and isn't applied in redox reactions

*Base+Non-metallic oxide--------) salt+water

example: CO2+Ca(OH)2----------) CaCO3+H2O.

I hope this helps u
