India is divided into 26 sedimentary basins geographically based on geology of that regions , thatis their depositional environments, rock types, age, geographical features etc.Oil was discovered first in Assam-Arrakan Basin at Digboi,Assam by the then Britishers in 1889. Since then, many important discoveries such as The Bombay High in the Gulf of Khambhat,Off the coast of Mumbai in 1965 and Gas discoveries in Cambay basinand Assam-Arakan basin in 1960’s , Gas discoveries in South basin fields of Krishna-Godavari and offshore at Bay of Bengal in 1970’s,most recent discovery being Barmer in Rajasthan. Many more exploratory projects are undergoin at various prospective basins and some have been confirmed for presence of Petroleum such as in Norteastern state of manipur, offshore areas in Bay of Bengal , Arabian Sea, and also parts of Andhra Pradesh. This are places (regions) in Indian where petroleum is currently found and there areprospects of finding it in many other places at the current pace of exploration.
