the sound is produced when something vibrates and sound is propagated  through air as a longitudinal wave. Sound needs a medium for propagation that is solid,liquids and gases.

when an object vibrated then the air layers around it start vibrating in exactly same way and carry sound waves from the sound producing object to our ears.
