Genetics is evolved in the determination of sex of any child. This can be explained as follows, that the chromosomes that determine the sex of a child are called Sex chromosomes. There are two types of sex chromosomes, one is X type and other is Y type.

★A male [man or father ] has XY set of chromosomes, which means one X chromosome and one Y chromosome. This means that half the gametes or sperms will have X chromosomes and half have Y chromosomes.

★A female [woman or mother] has XX set of chromosome, which means Both chromosome are of X type and all female gametes or Ova will have only X chromosomes.

The sex of a child depends on what happens at time of fertilization:-

If a Sperm carrying X chromosome fertilises an Ovum [or egg] which carries X chromosome, then the child born be a girl and the children have combination [or set] of XX chromosomes.

If a Sperm carrying Y chromosome fertilises an Ovum [or egg] which carries X chromosome, then the children that born will be a Boy and the child have the combination of XY chromosome.

Note:- Father is responsible for determining the sex of progeny, because if father contributes X chromosome then the progeny type will be girl and If Y chromosome then progeny type by Boy. The belief that A Woman is responsible for determining sex is completely wrong.

The sex of the child determined in human being  is known as ALLOSOMIC GENETIC DETERMINATION OF SEX and is of XX-XY type.

  • Here the sex is determined by sex chromosome.
  • Female have 2 identical chromosomes named as 'X' chromosome ,while males have 1 'X' chromosome and 1 'Y' chromosome.
  • Sex of baby  is determined by the type of sperm which fuses with egg.
  • Male produces 2 types of sperm i.e, androsperm (22+Y) and gynosperms (22+ X),while the female produces one type of egg (22+X).
  • An offspring is male if an egg fertilized by a Y bearing sperm or female if an egg is fertilized by an X bearing sperm.
  • This method of sex determination is called male heterogamety.
