how is voltmeter is connected in circuit and why it is connected in that position.Answer in brief

voltmeters measure voltage across a circuit. There is also a meter called multimeter which combines all these functions together and few others too.It has very high resistance to ensure that it's connection do not alter flow of current in the circuit.Now if it is connected in series then no current will be there in the circuit due to it's high resistance. Hence it is connected in parallel to the load across which potential difference is to be measured.

Voltmeter is always connected in parallel with circuit.As voltmeter is used to determine the potential difference across any two points in a circuit,it is connected to the two points as parallel.
voltmeter has infinitely large resistance due to which when connected in parallel will draw a minimum current possible towards them, preventing a wrong current readings
