Academic libraries and information centers play important roles as sources of valuable records, which help to meet the information needs of the society. In modern settings, these centers are often equipped with state of the art information technology (IT) resources in order to facilitate information acquisition, dissemination and access to resources domiciled in remote repositories which where beforehand not possible. To this end, the impact of information technology (IT) in academic libraries in Nigeria in order to meet the scholarly needs of their patrons cannot be overemphasized. Factors that should be considered in setting up fully functional IT compliant libraries include: availability of space, technical know-how, trained IT manpower, funding, and maintenance culture. Having outlined these, the perception to IT resource and availability of adequate training for the eventual users of these resources could also pose significant challenges. Finally, this paper outlines a number of factors that could affect the full implementation of IT services in academic libraries.
