how lightning conductors can protect the building from the effects of lightning
Answers
Answer:
The purpose of a building’s lightning conductor is to provide a low resistance path for lightning, rather than have the current of the lightning stroke pass through the fabric of the building.
In actual fact, the lightning conductor will often (usually?) prevent the building being hit by a lightning stroke in the first place, The top of the conductor is pointed and, when the charge builds up prior to a stroke, will ionise the air causing the charge to be leaked away before the voltage becomes sufficient for a stroke to occur.
This does not always work but, if the lightning conductor is suitably located on the building, all the current will safely pass down the conductor to earth.
