In flowering plants, the megagametophyte (also referred to as the embryo sac) is much smaller and typically consists of only seven cells and eight nuclei. This type of megagametophyte develops from the megaspore through three rounds of mitotic divisions.

Based on the number of megaspores involved in the development of embryo sac, the number of divisions underwent by nucleus and the organisation of nuclei in mature embryo sac , embryo sacs are of three types. One such type of embryosac is monosporic, eight nucleate or polygonum type of embryo sac.

Polygonum type embryosac is monosporic, seven celled structure with eight nuclei. It develops from the chalazal megaspore. Nucleus undergoes 3 nuclear divisions to form eight nuclei. It is a normal embryo sac. All the megaspores in some cases survive. In some only two megaspores survive. The pattern of arrangement of the cells is same.
