How many marks are deducted for exceeding the word limit?

It is dependent on teacher but usually teacher do not cut marks more than 1/2

Well, it actually depends on how much you exceeded. If it is an essay to be written in 120 words and you took 140 - 150, that's okay. The marks which you lose there will not be due to the excess of words... But if you exceed 150 words for a 120 word essay, then you might lose 1 mark at the very maximum. Nothin' much to worry about.
