This relates to one of the biggest misconceptions in astronomy.

The distances between planets are huge compared to the sizes of planets. The distances between solar systems (stars) are huge compared to the size of solar systems.

But the distances between galaxies are actually quite small compared to the size of galaxies; they are actually quite densely packed.
