If you want to count a number of blocks somewhere, you can multiply the no of blocks in the length, with the no of blocks in breadth. You get it

for eg:


x   x   x
x   x   x
x   x   x
x   x   x

If you want to count x here,  so the length has 4 and breadth has 3, therefore , the ans is 4*3 , 12.

the counting of squares doesnt require any specific formulae!
it depends on the trick of counting them.
