if a person in urban India has enough money to buy 2100 calories worth of food, he or she is supposed to be above poverty line. The money required to buy food worth 2100 calorie a day for a month is Rs 539. Remember that housing, education, and healthcare are not measured.

While determining poverty line in India, the physical quantities like minimum level of food requirement, clothing, fuel , light, education and medical requirement are determined for subsistence.
After that, these physical quantities are multiplied by their prices in rupees.
At present, the estimation of poverty line by food requirement is based on calories requirement. The calorie needs depend upon age, sex and type of work that a person does.
In India, the average accepted calorie requirement is 2400 calories per day in rural area and 2100 calories per day in urban area. The monetary expenditure per capita needed to buy these calorie requirements in terms of food is revised by the Government periodically.
The poverty line is estimated periodically for every five years by conducting sample surveys that is done by National Sample Survey Organization.
In the year 2000, a family in rural area earning less than 1,640 rupees and a family in urban area earning less than 2,270 rupees are considered below poverty line.
