They contain symbiotic rhizobia bacteria within nodules in their root systems, producing nitrogen compounds that help the plant to grow and compete with other plants. When the plant dies, the fixed nitrogen is released, making it available to other plants; this helps to fertilize the soil.

Answer:

Rhizobium bacteria are present in root nodules of plants like pea . They fix nitrogen from atmosphere into soil in form of nitrogenous compounds or nitrates.

Explanation:

So first of all these bacteria attack or collect atmospheric nitrogen from air . This nitrogen can not be directly taken from atmosphere to plants for their food in form of protein. So these bacteria collect them in root nodules of plants and start fixing nitrogen into nitrates. After all when nitrogen are converted into nitrogenous compounds they are ready to be taken up as protein for plants which further get transferred to other organisms.

This process can also be done with help of blue green algae.
