Chaityas were solely used for prayers. As Buddhists monks wandered from place to place, they needed some place to stay during rainy season. These places came to be known as Viharas (residence of Buddhist monks).

It needs to be mentioned that Kings who patronized Buddhism, built Viharas and Chaityas for Buddhist monks. Emperor Ashoka’s contribution in this regards secured a golden place in the annals of art and cultural history.
