we know that ...
Oxygen belongs to the group 16 of periodic table so its charge is "-2"
According to the formula there are "2" oxygen so charge will be "-4"
Nitrogen forms an ion with a charge of "+3"
So,
(+3-4) = "-1" charge of Nitrate
again we see that..
Nitrate ion with its Valency is NO3 (1-)
Formula for the Nitrate ion is NO3, hence the Valency is "1"
