Phenol is heated with zinc dust to form benzene. Benzene is treated with methyl chloride in presence of anhydrous AlCl₃ to form toluene. Step-3:—Oxidation of toluene to form benzoic acid. Toluene is oxidised by alkaline KMnO₄ to form potassium benzoate, which on acid hydrolysis forms benzoic acid.
