Hey there,
● Propene to 2,3-dimethyl butane -
First propene is treated with HBr to get 2-bromopropane.
CH3-CH=CH2 + HBr ---> CH3-CH(Br)-CH3
2-bromopropane then reacts with sodium (Wurtz reaction) to give 1,2-dimethyl butane.
2CH3-CH(Br)-CH3 + 2Na ---> CH3-CH(CH3)-CH(CH3)-CH3 + 2NaBr
● Butan-2-ol to ethanol -
Butan-2-ol on acid dehydration gives but-2-ene.
CH3-CH2-CH(OH)-CH3 ---> CH3-CH=CH-CH3
But-2-ene on ozonolysis with zinc water gives acetaldehyde.
CH3-CH=CH-CH3 + 2[O] ---> 2CH3-CHO
Acetaldehyde on further reduction produces ethanol.
CH3-CHO + H2 ---> CH3-CH2-OH
Hope this helps you...
