metals it's oxidation number its +group number,for non metal it's oxidation number is it's -group by this we can calculate oxidation number of any compound

lets virtualise a compound
MnO2
we have to find ox. state of Mn
we know ox. state of O=2-
so we can write as x + 2×(-2)=0
or x-4=0
or x=+4
