First get to know the electronic configuration of the compound or element

for eg

Oxygen

Atomic number - 8

Electronic configuration- 2,6

so 6 electrons are there in the outermost shell . For oxygen to become a stable element,it should either gain two electrons or give away six electrons. As it is difficult in giving six electrons ,it gains 2 electrons

therefore it has a valency of minus 2
