Hydropower is the most efficient way to generate electricity. Modern hydro turbines can convert as much as 90% of the available energy into electricity. The best fossil fuel plants are only about 50% efficient. In the U.S., hydropower is produced for an average of 0.85 cents per kilowatt-hour (kwh).

The water in a reservoir behind a hydropower dam is another example of potential energy. The stored energy in the reservoir is converted into kinetic energy (motion) as the water flows down a large pipe called a penstock and spins a turbine.

The water held behind the dam has potential energy because of its position. ... The potential energy in the stored water changes into kinetic energy when the water moves through the tunnel. The kinetic energy of the moving water turns turbines within the dam.
