First of all, to be able to do this trick in such a short amount of time, you will have to know square of numbers from 1 to 9

1^2 = 1

2^2 = 4

3^2 = 9

4^2 = 16

5^2 = 25

6^2 = 36

7^2 = 49

8^2 = 64

9^2 = 81

Math Trick – Square Root of a number

Practice these following steps and you will be calculating square roots in your head.

Example 1

Step 1 – Take the units number i.e. 6. Now let’s look at the square table above and identify which squares end up with 6. So 16 ,square of 4 and 36 square of 6 ends with a 6.

Step 2 – We will note both 4 and 6 down. One of them will be the units digit of our square root.

Step 3 – Now we cut/ignore the units and the tens digit and move on to the hundreds digit i.e. 5.

Now which square is closest to the number 5.

Yes, it is 4, square of 2. Our tens digit is 2.

Step 4 – Now we multiply the tens digit of the square root we noted, 2 with the number that follows, 3.

Step 5 Now let’s compare the multiple of the previous step with 5 (576). Check if 5 is greater or lesser than the multiple. Since 5 is less than 6, among 4 and 6 for units digit, we would choose 4 ( 4 is less than 6)

Hence, square root of 576 is 24.

Let’s look at 2 more examples to understand this trick better

Example 2 – 3249

Step 1 – 9 – 3 and 7

Step 2 – 3/7

Step 3 – 32, 5 (25)

Step 4 – 5 x 6 = 30 (32 >30)

Step 5 – 57

Tip for finding square root

From the examples you must have had notice that like in a 3 digit number we only took 5 and looked for a square closest and lesser than it. When it comes to 4 digit number we treat the hundredth and the thousandth digits as one number and look for a square closest and lesser than it.

How easy it is to find out the square root of number! We hope you enjoyed this trick and practice it enough number of times to start doing these calculations mentally.
