If one carbon has all the 4 groups different then it is a chiral carbon if 2 or more than 2 groups are same then it is non chiral. Here is the example and chiral carbon is denoted by a * sign.
Hope this will help u..

Hey folk..

•CHIRALITY IS A PHENOMENON THAT PREVADES THE UNIVERSE•

• Defination:
The carbon having asymmetric configuration I.e. having all 4 different groups attached.

• Generally Chiral carbon is denoted by C*.

• A chiral object is one that cannot be superposed on its mirror image , like our right and left hand, that's why chirality is also termed as HANDEDNESS.

NOW RULES TO IDENTIFY CHIRALITY/HANDEDNESS:

1) All groups attached to a carbon must be different.

2) *Even isotopes should be considered as different* (see attachment: 1)

3) Carbon should be sp3 hybridised.

A most important rule which we used to negelect (refer attachment: 2)

• Reason for attachment 2: Try to find difference see a carbon which I marked chiral , now go to the adjacent groups attached , one is hydrogen second is CH2 and third group is a long chain.

This is not much easy to understand but comment here if it is not clear.

Thank you

HOPE IT HELPS..!
