While solving word problems we will get little confusion whether the given word problems are to be multiply or to be divide ?


Let's find this out .


If the word problem is given the value for one object and ask to find out the value for certain number of objects then we have to solve it by multiplication .


If the word problem is given the value for certain number of objects and ask to find out the value for one object then we have to solve it by division.

Example ( 1 ) -

If cost of 1 toy is Rs 75 then find out the cost of 6 toys ?

Here - cost of 1 toy is given and ask to find out the cost of 6 toys , so multiplication.

6 x 75 = 450.

So , cost of 6 toys = Rs 450.

Example ( 2 ) -

If the cost of 5 toys is Rs 850 then find out the cost of one toy ?

Here - cost of 5 toys is given and ask to find out the cost of each toy , so division.

850 ÷ 5 = 170

So , cost of each toy is Rs 170.
