How to read & understand musical notes which are written in books?

Are they different for each instrument?

Musical notes are different for each instrument.You need to learn the symbols for understanding the musical notes.

I have been learning Harmonium for a long time.So I can tell you how to read the notes of indian classical music.

The indian music has 7 notes in musical scale.It is Sa,Re,Ga,Ma,Pa,Dha,Ni

Every classical music follows these notes in a scales.[There are also many other notes too]

In the above picture you can see the lines of the song are written under the notes.So you need to learn the notes to play the song.

Every student learn the notes in the first year of their learning music.
