you need to know the identities to begin with and solve the question how you would with whole numbers

Let's take an example-

(1/2a^2+1/2b^3)^2

the identity used will be (a+b)^2=a^2 + 2ab + b^2

(1/2a^2)^2 + 2*1/2a^2*1/2b^3 + (1/2b^3)^2

=1/4a^4 + 1/2a^2b^2 + 1/4b^2
