How was the conflict regarding mandal commission solved?
Answers
Supreme Court of India passed the judgement in 1992 that Mandal commission's recommendations and classification of OBC was a good indicator for social and economic backwardness.
The recommendations of Mandal Commission in 1980, were not implemented soon on as the government had changed. But in 1990 again Prime Minister VP Singh of Janata Party government implemented reservations for OBC as per the commission’s recommendations.
However, some students from North of India had filed a petition in the SC against the government order. So Supreme court stayed the order. The arguments against the order were that using caste as backwardness is not appropriate. Using caste for reservation results in unfair treatment of other castes. Also the performance of government and public sectors will suffer badly.
In 1992 the supreme court upheld the reservations. SC believed that reservations for OBC will uplift and improve the status of OBC population. SC believed that the caste could be taken as an indicator for backwardness.
